bmx racing

What was your sport and how did you get into it?

My Sport was BMX racing and I got involved by word of mouth and going down to a local BMX track. I enjoyed the training and just kept going back.

Tell us about the highlights of your sporting career?

My highlights in my career are being back to back British champion, competing at the world cup finals, becoming a European cup winner and being the 2014 world bronze medalist.

What were some of the challenges you experienced and how did you overcome them?

Injuries and mindset were a big challenge, along with politics in sport. These thing affect your performance and your mental state. You overcome injuries by staying committed to the recovery and wanting to come back stronger. You manage to gain your confidence back by working hard and trusting that you are doing everything you can to be the best, the results helped me get my confidence back. As for the politics i just kept racing for myself.

What have been your highlights while working at the Trust?

My highlights would be working with a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) school in the area I grew up in and using my sport and skills to help the younger generation.

What do you do now alongside working for the Trust?

I compete in a new sport now, electric scooter racing. I also coach BMX and I manage myself and my brother who is also a BMX racer.

What life advice would you give a young person?

My advice would be, don’t be fooled by social media and focus on what you can do today and tomorrow, that will build the blocks to reach your end goal.

What experience do you have of working with corporate organisations?

I worked and had to learn to navigate within British cycling for 10+ years as a young black man

What does Being Me mean to you?

I think that being yourself is the only way you can really be happy. We are living in a time where people do things to please other people or lie to look a certain way, and although its easy to get roped into it, it’s tough to stay in your own lane. We are rewarded in life for doing things that are hard. So be yourself and be a good person, things will work out for the best.
