powering potential with Young Leaders

Sheffield Hallam University this week saw the launch of our first ever leadership programme based in a university, with 16 students joining our six week long Young Leaders programme.

Former European swimming champion Adam Whitehead and Commonwealth badminton champion Jenny Wallwork teamed up to deliver the first session of the Young Leaders programme to students from a range of different courses at the university. The programme is designed to train a generation of young leaders, who genuinely care about their community and want to improve it for the better. Over the course of the six week programme, students will:

  • Improve their understanding around the determinants of health and wellbeing

  • Increase their confidence as a leader in a community setting

  • Develop coaching and mentoring skills as

  • Improve teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

  • Increase their motivation and ability to act as an agent of change in their local community

Thanks to funding from Westfield Health, all attendees will also have the opportunity to take a free Mental Health First Aid qualification as part of the course, enhacing their understanding of mental health problems and how this can impact on individuals and society.

After the first session, Adam said:

It’s been fantastic to launch this programme today at Sheffield Hallam University. The students here are excited to get started and there was a great energy in the room from everyone involved. I know that in just a few weeks we will have a great group of young people who will be ready to make real, lasting and positive change in their local communities.

Thanks to our partnership with Westfield Health we are working with over 200 young people in Sheffield this year to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. Alongside this Young Leaders programme our sporting champions are also in ten schools across the city delivering On Track to Achieve and we’re shortly about to start a new programme where we’ll be offering one to one mentoring to 50 students at Parkwood Academy in Sheffield who are at risk of involvement with violence, as part of a wider Youth Endowment Fund scheme.
